It’s a beautiful day for a pilgrimage!
Today I have chosen to journey to Anaeho’omalu along the beautiful Kohala Coast. She has been calling me since I arrived on Hawai’i Island and is the closest point for me to visit the grand Pacific Ocean.
This is a place renowned by Native Hawaiians for fishing. It is part of the Waikoloa Ahupua’a.
The Q’ero of Peru have taught me that the most important connection to make is to our Itu Apu and Paqarina - loosely translated, these are our nature parents. Our Itu Apu tends to be the dominant feature upon the land where we are born; big, guardian type of energy. Often they are hills or mountains. Our Paqarina is our closest water source to where we are born. We have our Itu Apu and Paqarina of our birth and they are with us always. We also have our Itu Apu and Paqarina of our pachamamita - our home where we live now. Growing our relationship with our nature parents is foundational to growing our connection to land and community, family and self.
Mastay is a term in Quechua that I understand to be “gathering”. The practice is to gather from nature items to be utilized in the offering. Many cultures have protocols around this practice. I remember listening to my teacher Fredy Conde Huallpa speak of his grandfather gathering 2 donkeys worth of supplies for his offerings.
There is no need to go to the store! Gather from your houseplants, from the land around you. Make an offering back as a thank you for what you have gathered; a pinch of cornmeal, tobacco or better yet, beauty you have grown yourself. I like to use dried orange peel, flower petals, lavender, mint and sage (when I was in Utah). Even in the deepest winter, we can find offerings to give in cycles of reciprocity.
It is through giving that we earn the right to receive.
Here is a photo of my gathering.
Setting the space to create the offering. Your intention is what is most important here. Center in your heart ❤️.
Building the vessel to hold the offering. Since I am offering to water, I am making a vessel. Sometimes I offer directly to the wind or the land.
Here’s another vessel that I created in Utah a few years ago
